Trevor O'Neill (40) from Drimnagh in Dublin who was killed in Majorca on Wednesday night, has been described as a true gentlemen and a great neighbour by the residents of his local area.

The father-of-three was shot dead on Wednesday night while on holidays with his wife and children in Costa de la Calma in what is believed to be a case of mistaken identity.

One of the residents, who has lived in the area for over 50 years, said when she heard she was “absolutely shocked” and “they were only away on holidays”.

According to the resident she would often see Mr O’Neill outside playing with his kids.

Another resident said that what happened was “absolutely dreadful”. “My husband phoned me in work, just to tell me, I’m just in shock I can’t believe it.”

When asked how the rest of the neighbourhood would be feeling she said “I’d say everybody is devastated, a father like that, leaving three young kids without a father it’s dreadful. That somebody could go on holidays and not come back, it’s just really sad.”

According to the resident Mr O’Neill and a number of the locals attended a 21st of one of the men in the estate a few weeks ago and she said he was “having a great time” and “happy as Larry”.

“It would be a very close-knit community, this particular cul-de-sac, everybody would look out for each other,” she said.

“Drimnagh has always had a bad reputation, especially what has been going on for years, but I can say safely without question that this is a lovely neighbourhood. I’ve lived here a long time and there is a lot of lovely people in the area and I’m sure they’re all affected the same way I am.

“It’s a very quiet neighbourhood and the neighbours are brilliant around here and Trevor would have been a very good neighbour, he would have been always looking out for everybody.”

Mr O'Neill worked with Dublin City Council and was described by the Council's chief executive officer Brendan Kenny as a "hard-working and dedicated employee.

“The management and staff of Dublin City Council are shocked to hear of the tragic death of Trevor O’Neill in Majorca last night,” said Mr Kenny “On behalf of the management team, city councillors and staff of Dublin City Council, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to Trevor’s family and friends”.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr also expressed his sincere condolences to Mr O’Neill’s family. He extended his “deepest sympathies” on behalf of the council and “the people of Dublin” to Trevor’s family and friends.

“Trevor was a man who served his community as a hard working employee of Dublin City Council and his death has left all those who serve our city in a state of shock.

"The brutal and appalling manner, in which his life was taken, while he holidayed with his family in Spain, must mark a watershed in the fight against the scourge of organised criminal violence in our city, which would now seem to even stalk its citizens when they are abroad."
