Two brothers arrested in US over shooting of garda

Police in New Orleans have arrested two brothers in connection with the shooting of garda Brian Hanrahan in the city last week.

Officers confirmed the arrest of Melvin and Keith Galle at an address in Laharpe Street but said the investigation remained in progress.

The development comes just two days after the release of photo-fits of the suspects.

Mr Hanrahan, a 32-year-old father of one and a Limerick based garda, was shot in the lower back and leg while socialising in the city on January 27th. He remains recovering in hospital in the US.

His wife Emma Holland, his mother Rose, and father Brian Snr, have all travelled to New Orleans to be with him as he recovers.

The police department had released a detailed description of the two men in a bid to track them down. They also offered a reward of up to $2,500 (€2,215) for information leading to their arrests.

Mr Hanrahan is based in Newcastle West, but is originally from Tipperary. He had suffered spinal injuries in what is thought to have been a botched robbery.

The shooting occurred in the seventh ward area of the city, where Mr Hanrahan was holidaying with his father.
