Two men were arrested by gardaí early this morning after a taxi driver was held up and the vehicle was stolen in Dublin.

The incident happened at about 2.20am after the taxi had picked up two passengers in Castleknock and drove them a short distance to Laurel Lodge road. The passengers then asked the driver to stop the taxi, ordered him out of the vehicle and drove away, a Garda spokesman said.

Gardaí stopped the taxi about an hour later at 3.20am on the Howth Road. They arrested two men, aged 28 and 20, and recovered a knife.

The men are being questioned at Blanchardstown Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 under which they can be held for up to 24 hours.
