Two men are to appear in court on Friday charged in connection with the discovery of up to €3 million worth of cocaine and heroin, four firearms and ammunition in a vehicle in Dublin.
Gardaí investigating organised crime stopped a vehicle at Greenhills Road in Tallaght on Wednesday evening and discovered the drugs, along with a number of weapons.
The weapons recovered included an AK-47, two .22 calibre rifles and a loaded pump action shotgun. Gardaí also found over 100 rounds of ammunition, silencers and telescope sights for the weapons.
The two men, aged 41 and 34, were arrested and detained at Tallaght Garda station under Section 2 of The Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
Detective chief superintendent Michael O'Sullivan of the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau said the operation would help protect communities nationwide.
“Last night’s successful operation which led to the seizure of high-powered weapons and drugs is part of An Garda Síochána’s strategy to tackle organised crime groups operating within the community,” he said.
“Taking this large amount of drugs and high-powered weaponry off the streets will help protect communities around the country.”
