A District Court judge in the midlands has demanded that the chief executive officer of the Midland Health Board attend court to explain the boa rd's failure to organise a case conference for a 15-year-old boy in care. This was despite numerous requests by the National Assessment and Remand Unit.

"I have never seen a letter from the remand unit which carries so much frustration," said Judge John Neilan, who read a letter presented at yesterday's District Court in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford.

Judge Neilan referred to the comments of High Court judge Mr Justice Kelly on the "nauseating" situation whereby people say that something is being done but nothing gets done.

He said the remand unit was being "fobbed off" by the health board. "On his 21st appearance in court, I can only endorse and commend your remarks," said the boy's solicitor, Mr Frank Gearty.
