Croke Park pays tribute to key figures

The Canal End of Croke Park was renamed today at a ceremony in the stadium

The Canal End of Croke Park was renamed today at a ceremony in the stadium.  The stand - which is at the opposite end to Hill 16 - will now be known as the Davin Stand.

The stand is named in honour of Maurice Davin, the first president of the association and also one of its founding members.

GAA President Sean Kelly and Director General Liam Mulvihill presided over the ceremony where other sections of the ground were named after famous figures of the association.

The media centre in the Hogan Stand has been named in memory of the famous broadcaster Mícheál Ó Hehir who commentated on 99 All-Ireland finals between 1938 and 1985.

The ceremony also saw former presidents Frank Dineen and former secretaries Luke O'Toole, Padraig Ó Caoimh and Sean Ó Síocháin remembered.

The Nally Terrace was dedicated to the memory P.W. Nally, a major influence on Michael Cusack and the founding fathers of the association until his death in prison in 1891.
