THE ninth century Cross of Kells, badly damaged by a bus last month, is to be removed from the Meath town for repair and cleaning. The Urban District Council chairman, Mr Michael Allen, expects the Office of Public Works to shift the cross this week.

The cross marked the entrance to the monastery where part of the Book of Kells was written.

There is debate in the town about where the repaired cross should be placed. The previous, two councils have voted that it should be moved from the junction of Cross Street and John Street.
