A crowd of around fifty people attempted to cut down CCTV poles in the Ardoyne area of Belfast last night.

A crowd of around fifty people attempted to cut down CCTV poles in the Ardoyne area of Belfast last night.

Shortly before midnight, the crowd began to cut down CCTV polls in Brompton Park and Estoral Park. Police arriving on the scene came under heavy attack from the crowd, who threw petrol bombs, paint bombs and other missiles.

Police made one arrest at the scene.

There were no cameras on the poles involved, a police spokesman said.

Additional CCTV cameras were installed in the Ardoyne area following street violence over the Holy Cross school dispute last year.

In a separate incident a young man (17) was badly beaten in a paramilitary-style attack in Belfast overnight.

The youth was alone in the flat when four masked men burst into a flat in the Skegganiel area just before 2 a.m. Two of the men were armed with baseball bats and a gun.
