Ulster Unionist leader Mr David Trimble was pursued by a hostile mob of loyalists after winning a re-count in his Upper Bann seat.
Mr Trimble was jostled as he left the declaration in Banbridge having defeated the Democratic Unionist Party's candidate Mr David Simpson by 2,058 votes.
A defiant Mr Trimble, who was barracked throughout his victory speech, told his DUP critics that they would have to accept three facts about the General Election.
"We defeated William McCrea," he said in a reference to his Party's victory in South Antrim.
"We defeated Bob McCartney (in North Down) and the DUP conspired to hand a seat to Sinn Féin in Fermanagh and South Tyrone."
Mr Trimble also defiantly told Mr Simpson's supporters that they would have to accept that the Ulster Unionist Party still was the largest party in unionism in terms of the popular vote.
He told his constituents that he would continue to represent them to the best of his ability.
But he added: "In terms of the way forward and the difficult job we are engaged in, we will get it (the Good Friday Agreement) properly implemented.
"We are not quitters. We will stick with this job until it is done."
