Bohemians striker Glen Crowe was today officially added to the Republic of Ireland squad for Saturday’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Portugal.

Crowe had originally been invited to train with the squad but a hamstring injury sustained by Gareth Farrelly during yesterday’s Nationwide Division One play-off final in Cardiff means Mick McCarthy has given Crowe an official call up.

"He has done well in training. I have been pleased with him and he has enjoyed it. I have not made him any promises and I’m not saying he will definitely be on the bench but stranger things have happened," said McCarthy

If Robbie Keane does not recover from the ankle injury which he exacerbated in training today Crowe may well get that place on the bench with Feyenoord’s David Connolly starting.

Ireland’s other big injury concern is Kenny Cunningham. The Wimbledon captain took no part in today’s session and is "a considerable doubt" for Saturday.

"But he is such a good guy to have around and exerts such a big influence that we will definitely be keeping him with us," said the manager.

Stephen Carr also picked up a knock in training today but it is not considered serious. Niall Quinn participated fully in today’s session and will be ready for Saturday though he may not play in tomorrow morning’s warm-up match against the under 21’s.
