Cragg, the fastest European over the distance this year, finished third in a time of 13.50.12. The race was won by Turkey's Halil Akkas in a time of 13:48.79 while Dutchman Gert-Jan Liefers was second over the line in a time of 13:49.73.

With the top five finishers guaranteed a place in Sunday's final, Cragg looked extremely comfortable throughout and was in the top five for almost all of the twelve and a half lap race.

In the heats of the women's 200 metre's Ciara Sheehy failed to finish in the third heat while Anna Boyle finished fifth in the final heat in a time of 23.94  which was not enough to progress.
