Charlton manager Alan Curbishley has signed a new four-year contract with the club after deciding against taking over at West Ham.

Curbishley (43) had been linked with the Upton Park job after Harry Redknapp quit just before the end of this season. A former West Ham player who has been with Charlton for 10 years, Curbishley led the Addicks to their best-ever Premier League position of ninth last season and is determined to build on that success.

He told skysports.com: "Following all the speculation about my future, I am pleased to commit myself to Charlton. We have a very talented squad of players and there is money to spend strengthening it.

"Capacity at The Valley is also rising and the income from that will enable us to be more competitive in the transfer market."

Curbishley is expected to be handed a £10 million pound sterling transfer kitty to consolidate Charlton's position.

Chairman Richard Murray said he was relieved to have sealed Curbishley's future and believes the south London side will get stronger.

"We have built up a friendship over the years and Alan always wanted to stay. In many respects we were the success story of London football last season," he said.
