Cyprus, often named as a conduit for Serbian money, tightened bank supervision yesterday to prevent Mr Milosevic siphoning funds out of Belgrade through the Mediterranean island, officials in Nicosia said.
Mr Milosevic would be arrested if he fled to Cyprus, an official said. "We have given instructions to all banks to closely monitor all transactions which are directly or indirectly connected with Yugoslav entities," Mr Spyros Stavrinakis of the Central Bank of Cyprus said.
Meanwhile Greece is sticking to the EU line that Mr Milosevic should stand trial on war crimes charges, a senior government official said. Greece opposed last year's NATO airstrikes on fellow Orthodox Serbia, but has distanced itself from Mr Milosevic in recent months.
