Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has lodged an objection to conditions attached to the building of a new runway at the State's busiest airport.

Fingal Co Co attached 39 conditions to the granting of planning permission for the project last April.

"While the DAA has welcomed the overall decision to grant permission for the development of a new runway, it has decided to lodge an appeal so as to try to avoid duplication of some conditions and to seek clarification with respect to others," it said in a statement today.

Outline permission was granted for the construction of a runway parallel to the existing strip and 1.6 km further north. The DAA believes the new runway may need to be operative by 2012.

"The construction of a new runway at Dublin Airport is a vital component of the overall future development plans to enable the Airport to handle in excess of 30 million passengers per annum," the statement said.

The estimated cost of the project is €150 million. Among Fingal Co Co's conditions is a requirement to the DAA pay for road upgrading and alterations in addition to a €21.5m contribution for costs "in respect of public infrastructure and facilities" to benefit the community.

The full cost of infrastructural improvements to cater for Dublin Airport expansion plans which could see the construction of two new terminal is estimated in the region of €200m.

The DAA's runway proposal has met local opposition. Uproar (United Portmarnock Residents Opposing Another Runway) say the flight path serving the runway will pass over schools and homes with up to 10,000 people affected.
