This year's Daffodil Day raised a record €3.3 million, the largest amount ever, despite extreme bad weather throughout the country at the time.

Chief Executive of the Irish Cancer Society John McCormack said March 26th exceeded all expectations and thanked the 5,000 volunteers for their work.

He said: "We would like to thank them especially and thank the public of Ireland for supporting our most successful Daffodil Day appeal ever.

"The extra funds raised this year will allow us to continue to expand our nursing services and bring better quality specialist care and assistance to even more patients and their families at every stage of the cancer journey," he added.

The proceeds from the Irish Cancer Society's 19th Daffodil Day will be used to provide free nationwide patient care services including hospital and community based nursing services for people with cancer and their families.

Other services include a national cancer information service, oncology liaison nursing in major cancer treatment hospitals, a grant towards specialist palliative care nurses in the community, night nursing, counselling services and cancer nurse education and training.

The society also said that €1.5 million out of the total will go into funding the night nursing service for people with an advanced stage of their illness.
