Anthony Daly has resigned as manager of the Clare senior hurlers, ending a three-year term in which the county twice came to the brink of All-Ireland success.

Daly, who guided the Banner to All-Ireland semi-final appearances this year and last year, handed in his resignation on Friday evening and on Saturday county board chairman Michael McDonagh confirmed Daly's departure.

"Anthony had always stated that this would be his last year," said McDonagh. "I was hoping he'd stay for another year. I spoke to him on Friday and he said he'd given it his all."

Although Clare failed to win a Munster SHC game under Daly, they did reach the latter stages of the All-Ireland series each year.

In his first year at the helm, Clare took Kilkenny to a quarter-final replay before bowing out. They lost to Cork by a single point in the 2005 semi-final and to Kilkenny in the semi-final this year.

The search for Daly's successor will begin in the next month or so, but already veteran goalkeeper Davy Fitzgerald and former trainer Mike McNamara have been linked with the vacancy.
