The Highlights and Lowlights of the year in Dance
THE HIGHLIGHTS
DUBLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL
Always variable, the dance offerings at this year's Dublin Fringe Festival were better than usual, the highlights being Drinking Dust from Junk Ensemble and Brokentalkers, Gavin Kostick's rambling A Distinct Glimpse, the Danish Mute Comp. Physical Theatre's Grasping the Floor With the Back of My Head.
DANCE ON FILM
Independent productions like Return Journey (Mary Nunan and James Kelly) and Frozen (Mairead Vaughan and Dara OBrien) the RTÉ/Arts Council Dance On The Box series, and films by choreographers John Scott, Fearghus Ó Conchúir and Rebecca Walters.
THREE ATMOSPHERIC STUDIES
Dublin Dance Festival at the Abbey
William Forsythe's searing and personal Three Atmospheric Studies headlined the re-branded Dublin Dance Festival at the Abbey. A bold statement outside the choreographer's normal territory, it's also likely to become a seminal dance work for this decade.
THE LOWLIGHTS
CRITICAL THINKING
The cheerful ignorance of panellists on RTÉ's The View when critiquing William Forsythe's Three Atmospheric Studies.
