There was disappointment for Irish moon watchers this morning when overcast and rainy weather rendered a lunar eclipse invisible.

The rare phenomenon which took place between 3.02 a.m. and 4.13. a.m. was best viewed over parts of Germany and Greece.
A lunar eclipse occurs when a rare alignment of the Earth, the moon and the sun. The Moon is seen to darken and turns deep red as it sinks toward the horizon.
The next eclipse will occur on the November 8th, 2003 at 23.30 p.m. Irish time, according to the Dunsink Observatory in Dublin.
