A fire that destroyed four DART carriages and caused smoke damage to 24 others on Saturday morning, is to cause some cancellations and a reduction in capacity on some transport routes this evening.

Cancellations are as follows:

  • Connolly-Bray: (17.10, 17.34)
  • Bray-Howth(18.25, 18.45)
  • Howth-Connolly: (19.37)
  • Howth-Greystones: (20.00)
  • Greystones-Bray: (21.33)

A spokesman for Iarnrod Eireann, Mr Barry Kenny, told ireland.coma number of services will be running on lower capacity until all 24 trains are back in operation.

Capacity will be reduced from six carriages to four until the damaged units are cleaned and repaired, decreasing capacity from 1,000 to 644 people per train.

But Mr Kenny said the main problem with the smoke damaged carriages was the odour left after the incident.

"Unfortunately there is quite a strong stench and we don’t want people travelling in that", he said. Some carriages are expected to be returned to service tomorrow and all should be back in operation by next week.

Two other badly damaged carriages will return to service within six months, Mr Kenny said, and four units were completely destroyed.

Gardaí at Clontarf Garda station have not yet established the cause of the blaze and are continuing their investigation.
