Anthony Davidson is set to become the first Briton to race for Minardi at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, it was reported today.

The 23-year-old British American Racing (BAR) test driver is in line to replace Malaysia’s Alex Yoong in Hungary and in Belgium next month. Confirmation of which is not expected until tomorrow.

Davidson was last year’s British Formula Three runner-up behind Japan’s Tukumo Sato, the current Jordan driver. Pressure had been mounting on Yoong after regularly failing to match team driver, Australia’s Mark Webber throughout the season.

"Alex will go into a busy test programme to figure out why he's lost confidence," a team source said while Yoong confirmed that he would be available to drive in Hungary if required.

"I will definitely go to Hungary whether I drive or not. If I'm not in the car, it's still my responsibility to be there to help the team in whatever way I can. I am still employed by the team even if I'm not racing."
