The Oscar glass remained half-full for Ireland today with nominations for U2 and Daniel Day-Lewis.
But there was disappointment for cinematographer Seamus McGarvey and make-up artist Michele Burke who missed out on nominations.
U2 received their first Academy Award nomination for the song The Hands that Built America, which features on the soundtrack of Gangs of New York, the epic feature directed by Martin Scorsese.

One-time winner Daniel Day-Lewis received his third nomination for his role as Bill "The Butcher" Cutting, a violent gang boss in
The Gangs of New York

Day-Lewis was previously nominated for his role as the wrongly imprisoned Gerry Conlon in Jim Sheridan's 1993 film In The Name of The Father. He won an Oscar in Sheridan's 1989 movie, My Left Foot
Irish cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, a contender for his work on The Hours, missed out and two-time previous winner in the best make-up category, Michele Burke, missed out on her seventh nomination for Austin Powers in Goldmember.
But Academy Award-winning screen icon Jack Nicholson extended his record as the most-nominated male actor in Oscars history by winning his 12th nomination for his role in About Schmidt.
The musical Chicagotopped the list of Oscar nominees with 13 nominations, including best motion picture. The Gangs of New Yorkand The Hoursfollowed Chicagowith 10 and 9 nominations, respectively - including best film nominations.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towersand Roman Polanski's The Pianistalso received best film nominations.
The Oscars, awarded by the Academy of MotionPicture Arts and Sciences, will be announced on Sunday, March 23rd.
