There were calls for the immediate resignation of the North's Minister of Health, Ms Bairbre de Brun, at the Democratic Unionist Party's (DUP) annual conference in Enniskillen at the weekend.

The Assembly member for Newry and Armagh, Mr Paul Berry, criticised the Sinn Fein Minister for spending money on "North-South junkets" and placing Irish-language job advertisements in newspapers.

"The real crisis in the health service at present is the Health Minister," said Mr Berry.

Ballinamallard branch representative Mr Raymond Farrell said: "Matron Bairbre . . . can spend thousands and thousands of pounds on Irish language-headed notepaper, on inter-governmental conferences and taking David Trimble to court. Let's put the money into the health service of Northern Ireland."

Ms Iris Robinson, Assembly member for Strangford, criticised Ms de Brun for calling reviews of aspects of the health service. "Her only input is to call for reviews. Indeed some say she will soon be ordering a review of the review," she said. "It's time for her to go." Delegates later voted to oppose the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.
