THERE should be greater worker participation in the management of Irish business, according to the Minister for Social Welfare. In his opening address to the first international seminar on worker directors in the EU, held in the European Foundation Conference Centre in Dublin, Mr De Rossa said worker directorships made sound economic sense and would be central to discussions on any new national agreement.

"Worker participation is good for enterprises and economics," he said. Mr De Rossa added that the establishment of worker directorships was only a start and worker participation in management needed to be extended throughout the public and private sectors. He pointed to the pensions area as one where greater democracy had been achieved through the appointment of member trustees.
