The European Commission is "foot-dragging" on its investigation of bank charges, according to the Dublin Labour MEP, Mr Proinsias De Rossa.

"The European Commission has been conducting an investigation for the last 15 months into complaints that European banks are operating cartels to overcharge for currency exchanges" he said.

Bank charges had increased, he said, despite the fact that 11 currencies had joined the eurozone. The public had been promised cheaper bank charges under the euro, but this was not yet the case "due to the greed of some banks", he added.
