The removal will take place today of the remains of Dr Patrick Henchy, former director of the National Library and the Chester Beatty Library, who has died following a fall at his home.

Born in Corofin, Co Clare, he was educated at St Mary's College and University College Galway, where he graduated with a double first in Irish and history. He taught in Letterkenny for a time before joining the National Library, initially as assistant librarian, becoming director in 1967.

As director of the Chester Beatty Library between 1976 and 1983 he improved public access by opening on Saturdays.

Dr Henchy, who was 88 last Saturday, is survived by his wife, Monica, and daughters, Deirdre and Mary. The removal is to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Donnybrook, at 5 p.m. The funeral takes place tomorrow after 10 a.m. Mass to Deansgrange Cemetery.
