The death has been announced of the former British prime minister Lord Callaghan.
A spokeswoman for the family said the former Labour prime minister died today on the eve of his 93 rdbirthday at his home in East Sussex.
Lord Callaghan's wife Audrey died 11 days ago.
He became prime minister in 1976 after the surprise resignation of Labour leader Harold Wilson. His three troubled years at Downing Street paved the way for the free-market revolution led by Margaret Thatcher and 18 years of Conservative government.

As well as being prime minister, Lord Callaghan also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary and spent a total of 32 years as a front bench spokesman, in government and opposition
