The death has taken place of Vera McVeigh, the 82-year-old mother of Columba McVeigh, who was "disappeared" by the IRA in 1975.

She had been ill for several months. Her husband, Paddy, died in 1997. She said he had never recovered from the disappearance of their son.

Ms McVeigh, who was from Castlecaulfield, Co Tyrone, spent 23 years waiting for Columba, 19 at the time of his death, to come home. This hoped-for return was dashed after she read in a Sunday newspaper in 1998 that the IRA had abducted and murdered him. In 1999, the IRA admitted it.

Ms McVeigh spent her remaining years trying to find out what had happened to his body. She was hurt by the belief that republicans from in and around the village of Donaghmore, where she lived, were involved, knew of her family's anguish over the years, and did nothing to alleviate it.

Information supplied by IRA sources to the Commission on the Disappeared led to searches of Braghan bog in Co Monaghan, but Columba's body was not found. Ms McVeigh was angry about IRA claims that he was an informer - and there is nothing to suggest that he was.

Fr Denis Faul gave her constant support in her quest. After his death last year, it emerged he had asked the Rev Ian Paisley to help her, and a meeting took place last November. Dr Paisley asked those with information to come forward. Ms McVeigh described the IRA as "scum."

She is survived by her two remaining sons, Eugene and Oliver, and her daughter, Dympna. She will be buried in Donaghmore on Friday morning.
