Gardaí last night described as a "tragic accident" the death of a Hungarian student at the Cliffs of Moher on Saturday afternoon.
According to a Garda spokesman, the student visiting the cliffs stayed behind to take extra photographs. The alarm was raised at about 5pm when he did not rejoin his companions.
A rescue operation was launched involving the Doolin unit of the Irish Coastguard and the Shannon-based coastguard helicopter.
The man's body was recovered at the base of the cliffs 1.5km south of the main viewing area and outside the zone which is overseen by rangers employed by Clare County Council.
This is the third fatality to occur at the cliffs this year. Last January, a mother and son fell to their deaths from the 600-foot-high cliffs.
A post-mortem examination of the man's body is to be conducted at the Mid-West Regional Hospital in Limerick today.
