Death reported in Derry water plant explosion

One man is reported to have died following an explosion at a water treatment plant on the outskirts of Derry city.

One man is reported to have died following an explosion at a water treatment plant on the outskirts of Derry city.

The blast is understood to have happened at Carmoney Water Treatment Works in Eglinton this morning.

Two others were injured in the blast. The extent of the injuries is not known.

The fire brigade and ambulance authorities have declared a major emergency.

Staff at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry also put an emergency plan into operation.

Police urged residents around the scene of the explosion to stay inside and
close all doors and windows.
