The general manager of an insurance company which refused to pay out in a case of suspected £60,000 arson received death threats, Dublin District Court was told yesterday. The court heard that the executive received threats by telephone and was sent a Mass card with his name on it following non-payment of insurance for a fire at a Dublin house.

Mr John Winters (53), of Rushbrook Drive, Templeogue, is accused of arson at his former residence in Westway Park, Blanchardstown, on April 10th last year.

Sgt Patrick Marry outlined the alleged threats while objecting to bail and said there was a warrant in England for the defendant's arrest in relation to criminal deception in 1986.

Judge Gerard Haughton remanded the defendant in custody with consent to independent bail of £20,000 with signing on and passport conditions, to appear again on October 14th.
