Beijing - The death toll in the collapsed factory accident in Zhejiang province in eastern China has risen to 12, with one person still missing, Miriam Donohoe reports.

Rescuers yesterday recovered three more bodies from the rubble. The collapse is the latest in a series of industrial accidents in China, which have highlighted lax safety standards and poor government regulation.

A two-storey building at the No. 2 Electroplating Factory in Yongjia County fell into a tidal river on Tuesday, but rising sea waters have complicated rescue work, according to the official Xinhua news agency. The building was constructed without the approval of local authorities, the reports said. Most of the dead were migrant workers. Police have detained six people for responsibility for the accident and were pursuing others.
