Gardaí in Dungarvan and officials from the Department of Agriculture are investigating the deaths of 42 cattle on a farm at Colligan, Co Waterford.

The discovery follows the deaths of 60 cattle found starved on a farm in Co Cork earlier this week.

Dungarvan gardaí received a call from a veterinary inspector on Wednesday regarding the discovery of carcasses at Knockenpower Lower in Colligan.

Having examined the scene with a senior veterinary inspector from the Department of Agriculture, they confirmed that 42 of the animals on the farm were dead. A further 40 live animals were examined and are being cared for on the farm by their owner, with sources suggesting they are in "reasonable" condition.

Sgt Mick Leacy said it was "very unusual" for so many dead animals to be found. "A clean-up operation is continuing on the farm in Colligan with the carcasses due to be brought to Waterford for rendering."

A Department of Agriculture spokesman stressed that there was no evidence of a risk to public or animal health as a result of the two unrelated incidents in Cork and Waterford.
