THE drugs problem in Ireland was a major debate at the ardfheis, reports Carmel Robinson. The candidate for the Dublin North-East constituency, Mr Larry O'Toole, said: "People are demanding action against the drug dealers."

A number of motions on the issue were passed including the support of the ardfheis for the "heroic" stand taken by community groups and activists in the battle against drugs and dealers. Mr O'Toole said it was one of the most major issues facing our society.

His theme was expanded by the party's candidate in Dublin South-Central, Ms Martina Kenna, said: "Despite the frustration and fear in our areas and the betrayal of our communities by successive governments, Sinn Fein has continued to offer support to those communities who, through self-organisation, self-help and community development, have courageously resisted the evil drug barons.

In a message to the drug dealers, one speaker said: "Your days are over. Unless we take action now we will have the drug problem in every village and town in the country."
