The US Federal Aviation Authority is expected to make a decision early today on when transatlantic flights will be allowed to resume. However it is thought likely that any resumption of services will be on a restricted basis.

All three airlines operating out of Ireland - Aer Lingus, Continental and Delta - have cancelled today's schedule and Aer Lingus has also cancelled inbound flights due from north America to Ireland on Friday morning.

Aer Rianta spokesman Mr Flan Clune described the situation as "unprecedented".

"In my 40 years in the business I have never seen anything like it".
