Dublin's new local television station, City Channel, has announced that it is to carry the first ever dedicated Polish TV programme to Dublin viewers.

The Polish news magazine programme  Oto Polska will be transmitted on City Channel in late September 2005. The channel is due to begin transmissions early next month.

Oto Polskawill bring politics, news, cultural, entertainment and sports events to the Polish community in Dublin.

Over 41,000 Poles - almost as many people as live in Waterford city - have made the 2,000km (1,240-mile) journey to Ireland in the year since EU accession.

Poles make up nearly half of the applicants for Personal Public Service (PPS) numbers, driven by 18 per cent unemployment at home in search of work in Ireland and Britain, the only EU states not to impose a seven-year work ban after accession .

On paper, the Polish economy is booming with growth twice the euro zone average. But away from big cities such as Warsaw, times are tough and emigration is a simple reality.

Commenting on the announcement City Channel's founder and Chief Executive, David Harvey said: "We are delighted to be the first TV station to provide a broad service for all ethnic communities living in Dublin.

"A similar offering will come on air in the future for the Filipino, Russian and Chinese communities living in Dublin," he added.

Commenting on the announcement Malgorzata Kozic, Consul with the Polish Embassy in Dublin said: "We really welcome this development as it will help Polish citizens in Dublin keep up to date with happenings back home - it's a great idea."
