BET in the early 23rd century Defron 5 is a deep space action adventure in a 3-D environment.
All alone, you are the last hope for the human race. (What an original storyline! It gets better.) The key to your survival lies in the depths of the remote mining station MRP6F and by repelling waves of alien space craft and use curing the base you will uncover the biggest galactic cover up mankind has ever faced.
What all this drivel boils down to is that Defcon 5 is basically another Doom clone and a poor one at that. Defcon 5 is marketed as a thinking man's Doom, so instead of going around blasting at everything that moves you have to contend with limo stations, VOS, droid control, turrett control, software control and the like.
You first objective is to locate the control room where you will be given your mission briefing. To accomplish this, you wander aimlessly around the maze like floors of the space station this becomes a little tiring considering you are only in search of the brief for the remainder of the game. And all the while, an irritating voice reminds you that you must go to the control room.
Things might have been made a little easier if a proper map had been available from the beginning but instead you must locate VOS terminals to pinpoint your location.
Defcon 5 looks to me like a hastily assembled project in which little thought has been given to the game player. It's not the worst of the Doom clones around but with competitors such as Duke 3D and Doom itself, Defcon 5 falls way short of the standard required.
