US Open:Sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro produced a rousing display to come from a set down and march into the semi-finals of the US Open at the expense of Marin Cilic. The Argentine struggled early on against his Croatian opponent, who knocked out Andy Murray in the last round, but as the match progressed he found his rhythm and powered to a 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-1 triumph on Arthur Ashe.
Del Potro, bidding to claim his first Grand Slam crown, reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows last year and was in danger of falling at the same stage this time around having lost the opening set before finding himself a break down in the second.
Cilic was continuing where he left off against Murray as he unleashed a series of devastating winners to leave Del Potro reeling while he gave nothing away on serve during a compelling opening set.
But the match turned on its head when the 20-year-old Argentina star finally carved out his first break point opportunity and ruthlessly took it with both hands, much to the delight of the crowd who were sensing a classic encounter was on the cards.
A pumped up Del Potro then clinically broke again and subsequently won the set to square the match and more importantly seize the momentum.
The next two sets were a procession for the sixth seed, who incredibly converted every one of his eight break points throughout the entire contest as Cilic failed to offer any genuine resistance to his power game.
