Republic of Ireland midfielder Rory Delap insists his Southampton teammates James Beattie and Marian Pahars are not to blame for the club's goal famine.

Beattie and Pahars got 30 goals between them last season in all competitions but a solitary penalty from Latvian star Pahars is all they have mustered so far this season.

And the former Derby player believes goalscoring is not just the responsibility of the Saints' strikers.

"Our strikers cannot take all the flak, we must score goals from other parts of the field," said Delap "Against West Brom last week we should have won comfortably. We have created plenty of chances in all our matches but we are having trouble converting them.

"If every player in our midfield set a target of getting five each that would be 20 goals and would make a huge difference.

"We don't score enough in midfield and I am as much to blame as the others. All this is doing is putting extra pressure on strikers to keep performing".

Delap, the club's record signing at £4 million sterling, netted twice last season in 28 league appearances.
