Delayed pay rise due for DCU staff this month

Staff at Dublin City University are to receive a delayed benchmarking and basic pay increase before the end of the month.

Staff at Dublin City University are to receive a delayed benchmarking and basic pay increase before the end of the month.

The double pay increase, a 3 per cent rise under Sustaining Progress as well as half the benchmarking award, was due to be paid on January 1st.

A spokeswoman for the university said yesterday that clarification had been required from the Higher Education Authority about how the increase was to be applied to different grades.

This had been the reason for the delay, but the increase would be paid this month, she said.

University lecturers were awarded a total increase of 3 per cent by the benchmarking body, but staff in administrative positions are to receive increases of up to 8 per cent.

Half of that amount in each case, on top of the 3 per cent basic increase, was due in January.

Other universities paid the increase last month, despite anger over the Government's failure to provide additional funds to cover the cost of benchmarking.

There had been speculation that DCU was to adopt a different stance and decline to pay the increase.

However, SIPTU's education branch secretary, Ms Chris Rowland, said the union had been assured in discussions with the university that this was not the case, and the sole reason for the delay was the need to get clarification from the HEA.
