Dell posts profit rise despite cheaper PCs

Computer maker Dell has reported a 28 per cent rise in quarterly net profits to a record $1

Computer maker Dell has reported a 28 per cent rise in quarterly net profits to a record $1.02 billion dollars despite steep falls in computer prices.

The figure translated into earnings per share, excluding one-time items, of 38 cents, in line with analysts' forecasts.

But Dell's second-quarter revenues of $13.43 billion, while up 15 per cent from a year ago, fell short of analysts' target of $13.7 billion.

Dell, which employs more than 5,700 people in the Republic, offset the price declines in personal computers by boosting unit sales faster than its rivals.

Dell shares finished 0.38 per cent lower at 39.58 dollars on the Nasdaq ahead of the earnings news.
