The rejection of the Lisbon Treaty has sent a “resounding message” to the EU “that we need democracy to be at the heart of the EU,” according to Declan Ganley, the founder of Libertas,

Speaking at a press conference in Dublin Castle Mr Ganley said that the No vote "was not just from us but from tens of millions of EU citizens", particularly, he said, those people in France and the Netherlands who had rejected the EU constitution two years ago.

"We, the citizens of Ireland are the people who are in touch with European sentiment not the Brussels elite".

He said that the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen now had "a mandate to go back to Brussels and renegotiate a better deal for Ireland".

He said the failure of the Yes vote was not down to the Yes campaign but "the failure of the European elite to deliver a document that the Irish people could say yes to".

Mr Ganley was asked on a number of occasions would he stand in next year’s European elections or if Libertas would continue to campaign on European issues and he refused to rule out either option.
