Advertisements for secondary-school supervisors appeared in newspapers across the State today as the Department of Education geared up for industrial action by the ASTI next month.

The Department is offering successful candidates a minimum of €68.56 a day for two hours of supervision work. They will be paid €34.28 for every hour of additional work.

Applications should be with school boards by Thursday at 5 p.m. It estimated that 2,000 people will be needed. ASTI is demanding double the amount being offered by the Government and back pay for work done on a voluntary basis up until now.

However the Minister for Education, Mr Michael Woods, is determined not to allow schools to close as a result of the planned action by the ASTI.
