The Rail Procurement Agency (RPA) rejected concerns over the safety of the Luas after a tram derailed over the weekend.

The Rail Procurement Agency (RPA) rejected concerns over the safety of the Luas after a tram derailed over the weekend.

Services were disrupted following the derailment of a tram at St Stephen's Green on Saturday afternoon. It is the second such derailment on the Luas since the start of the service.

The incident occurred around 2.30 p.m. as the tram was leaving the city heading for Sandyford. Passengers were disembarked and there was no report of any injuries.

Connex, the Luas operator, confirmed that inquiries are being made as to why the derailments occurred but insisted there is no concern over the safety of the tracks.

Full service was disrupted for several hours between St Stephen's Green and Beechwood, and a back-up bus shuttle service carried passengers between the two stops. Normal service continued between Beechwood and Sandyford.

Mr Ger Hannon of the RPA yesterday told The Irish Times: "It was a minor derailment and thankfully no one was injured. The disruption lasted for no more than an hour at which stage normal service resumed."

Previously, a tram left its tracks while trying an emergency crossover at the Beechwood station.
