A family has escaped injury after a pipe bomb exploded outside a house in Co Derry.

Two adults and three children were at home in the Articlave area of Coleraine when the device exploded, police said. A vehicle was seen leaving the scene.

British army explosives experts have been called to examine the area, and police have appealed for witnesses.

The SDLP’s Mr John Dallat condemned the attack: "What sort of mindless thugs go out at five o’clock in the morning with pipe bombs to attack an innocent Catholic couple with three young children in the house?"

Mr Dallat said: "No community is safe while these sick people are at large. I have spoken to the police who assure me that they are following a definite line of inquiry and have arrested one person and I welcome that".
