A 24-year-old unemployed Derry man appeared before the city's Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with the attempted murder of two police officers on Sunday.

The charge is linked to an incident in Shantallow where the police said a car was driven at two officers, striking one of them.

Mr John Patrick Johnston, Carnhill, was charged with attempting to murder Const John McClean and Const Ian Strawbridge.

Det Sgt Alan Holland told the magistrate, Ms Anita Boyd, that when charged with the offence, the defendant replied "Not guilty". He was remanded in custody until October 2nd.

Belfast trio face hijack charges

Three Belfast men were charged yesterday following the hijacking of a car containing a schoolgirl whose mother had gone into a filling-station. The woman, who is eight months pregnant, and her 11-year-old daughter were shocked and distressed by the incident at Glengormley on Monday night.

Mr Sean Brownlee (19), Brittons Parade, Whiterock, and Mr Thomas Browne (20), Woodside Walk, Poleglass, were charged with hijacking. Mr John Goodman (21), Glenbawn Close, Poleglass, was charged with aiding and abetting. They were remanded in custody.

Man knocks over coffin in attack

A man was accused of sacrilege yesterday following an incident at a Catholic church in west Belfast when a coffin containing the body of an 85-year-old woman was knocked off a trestle.

Mr Barry Gamble (18), an apprentice joiner, of Ballinderry, Co Antrim, faces three charges relating to the attack inside St Agnes chapel on Andersonstown Road.

Death threat leads to resignation

A member of the Fermanagh District Policing Partnership has resigned following a death threat.

At last night's DPP meeting in Lisnaskea, chairman Tom Elliott announced that independent member Cathal O'Dolan had resigned after he and his family were put in an impossible position.

A man claiming to represent Oglaigh na hEireann contacted media outlets earlier this week and warned that Mr O'Dolan would be executed if he continued his involvement with the partnership.
