TWO Derry men appeared to have conspired to defraud AIB bank of £719,000, an AIB bank manager claimed in the High Court yesterday.

The bank said the men had converted ordinary cheques into bank drafts, on which payment could not be stopped, and AIB had paid out over £719,000.

Miss Justice Laffoy granted the bank a temporary order which restrains Mr Kevin McGowan, of Rosskeen Park, Hazelbank, Derry and Mr Gerard (Gerry) McCaul, of Lisnarea Avenue, Culmore Road, Derry, from disposing or reducing their assets below £735,000.

The order continues until next Monday when the matter comes before the court again.
