The police in Derry said yesterday they would have "adequate officers" to respond to any outbreaks of violence during today's traditional Apprentice Boys of Derry parade.
Over 2,000 members of the order are due to take part in a city centre parade to commemorate the start of the 1688 Siege of Derry. However today's parade clashes with the televised soccer game between Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic, a clash which the PSNI say is "unfortunate".
The new governor of the Apprentice Boys, Mr William Allen, said he was hopeful today's parade would be incident free.
"I would say to people who are coming to watch the parade, they are quite welcome, but if their intention is to cause trouble, they should stay away, we don't want them." Meanwhile Sinn Féin MP Mr Martin McGuinness said peace was more important than the result of a football match.
