Buses leaving the Brandywell football ground last night were attacked by stone-throwing youths following a friendly match between Derry City FC and Linfield FC.

Police described the attacks as "wreckless and irresponsible."  Six buses were attacked and eight windows were smashed.

Ten people were treated for shock and one person suffered a knee injury.

PSNI Chief Superintendent Richard Russell said he was "extremely disappointed that the actions of a few spoiled what had been a trouble free event."

He added that it was more than likely that the game would now be remembered for events following the  match.

Linfield celebrated their highly publicised return to the Brandywell with an 84th-minute equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw, much to the delight of their travelling support of 300.
