Three thousand women on both sides of the border are to be targeted in a major health survey on emotional and mental well-being organised by the Well Woman Centre in Derry.
Researchers from the University of Ulster will carry out the survey in Derry, Omagh, Strabane, Limavady, Enniskillen, Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim.
They will be asked about the significant factors on their emotional and mental well-being and how they are affected by such factors as money, the environment, social and community networks, lifestyle and behaviours, and education.
Ms Karen Meehan of Derry Well Woman, said that because women were the main home-makers, they faced a whole range of economic and social pressures which could limit their lifestyle choices and affect their physical and psychological well-being.
Derry Well Woman had persuaded health boards on both sides of the border to support the project. "This is the first time there has been a co-ordinated, cross-border approach to developing a policy for tackling women's health needs," she said.
The survey will begin in May 2002 and the final report will be published in September.
