Derval resists the urge to run away

If Derval O'Rourke keeps winning championship medals at this pace the welcome home party at the airport could soon get a little repetitive. Shortly before 4pm yesterday she landed in Dublin with the rest of her Irish team-mates, and for the second time in six months she was the big star.

Just like when she returned from Moscow last March as world indoor champion, O'Rourke was Ireland's only medal winner at the European athletics championships in Gothenburg last week.

With the silver medal she won in Friday's 100 metres hurdles around her neck, O'Rourke was paraded into the arrivals lounge to the cheers of friends and family and later given a formal welcome home courtesy of one of her main sponsors, Spar.

"It's great seeing everyone here," she said. "Sometimes I get a bit shy and I think, 'Oh, God, just run away', but then it's so nice that everyone's here for me - it's very supportive. It'll be really nice to go out and have dinner with the family and then sit down and just breathe for a while."

Her father Terry and mother Eva returned from Gothenburg on Sunday and drove up from her home town of Douglas, Co Cork, with her sister Clodagh to meet her at Dublin airport.

"We're ecstatic," said Mr O'Rourke, while Clodagh said she was amazed at the reception. "It seems way better than when she came back from Moscow."

Because of the long delay after her race until the photo finish officials finally decided the silver medal would be shared with Germany's Kirsten Bolm, O'Rourke had to wait until Saturday afternoon for the actual medal ceremony. The celebrations then began in earnest that night, dragging on well into Sunday morning.

Fans in Cork will have to wait for almost a month to see her back home. "I'd love to jump on a plane now and go home, and sleep in my own bed, but my season isn't over and I just can't. It'll be September by the time I get back at this stage".

She will be competing in Friday's famous Golden League meeting in Zurich. Had she not won a medal in Gothenburg she was headed for a small meeting in Estonia.

She says she plans to run six or seven more races this season.
